Overview

We’ll discover the main historical sites of Santo Domingo, a city founded in 1498 by the Spanish on their arrival in America. We’ll visit places such as Santa María la Menor (Primate Cathedral), the National Pantheon and the Alcázar de Colón, home of the first Governor of Santo Domingo Diego Columbus, and Las Casas Reales Museum, all found in the colonial district.

We’ll shop at the Colonial Market, where the history of the New World began. Lunch will be at a restaurant in the prestigious Colonial District with its exquisite décor so typical of the region. Then we’ll visit the capital’s main government buildings.
We can enjoy the experience of visiting the capital of the Dominican Republic with its historic Colonial City.

What To Expect

Alcazar de Colon
The Alcázar is one of the most relevant spots in the Ciudad Colonial and the first fortified palace in the New World. The residence has been used as a home for the Columbus family of Toledo until approximately 1577. It was declared National Monument in 1870.

Panteon Nacional
The National Pantheon was built from 1714-1746 by the Spaniard Geronimo Quezada y Garçon and was originally a Jesuit church. Today, the structure stands as a national symbol of the Dominican Republic and serves as the final resting place of the Republic's most honored citizens.

Columbus Lighthouse (Faro A Colon)
Is a monument in tribute to Christopher Columbus.The Columbus Lighthouse is a cross-shaped monument made of reinforced concrete. Its dimensions are 680 feet (210 m) by 195 feet (59 m). There are 157 beams of light that emanate towards the sky from the structure and a rotating beam, which can be seen from space.

Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor
The Cathedral of Santo Domingo, better known as Primada de América Cathedral, was declared in 1546 the first cathedral of the New World by the Pope Paul III, at the request of the emperor Charles V. This gorgeous minor basilica is dedicated to Santa María de la Encarnación.

Zona Colonial
Is the historic central neighborhood of Santo Domingo and the oldest permanent European settlement of the Americas. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is an important section of the city due to the high number of landmarks, including Alcázar de Colón, Fortaleza Ozama, Catedral de Santa María la Menor, and others.

Designed in a restrained neoclassical style by Italian architect Guido D'Alessandro at the behest of Rafael Trujillo, construction started on February 27, 1944 —The centenary of Dominican independence —and was inaugurated on August 16, 1947.
